Planning permission was granted some time ago for a 2.5 megawatt electrical biomass turbine to be located at an existing waste recycling facility in Lincolnshire. The plant will generate enough electricity to supply 4350 houses. The fuel stock will be waste wood that is already processed on site at Mid-UK Recycling Ltd at Station Road Caythorpe. In it's first joint venture, Bioflame has teamed up with the recycling company to form a new company PBM Power Ltd. Mid-Uk Managing Director Chris Mountain claims "approximately 25,000 tonnes of wood waste that currently leaves our site on lorries will be able to be converted into electrical energy on-site. Not only will the local traffic situation be eased but enough energy to power about 4350 homes will be created". In fact, because electricity flows like water to its nearest point of use, even though the people of Caythorpe may be nominally buying their electricity from elsewhere, it is likely that Caythorpe will be the first village in the UK to be powered completely by renewable energy from biomass waste. Another first for Lincolnshire. Mid UK are also building a £500,000 education center on the site which will allow schools visits and members of the public to see how waste is turned into energy at first hand.
The build is well underway and the site will be generating electricity to the grid by October 2008.
